Subscription Proration FAQ
We have made some changes to our subscription options on Evolving Hockey – these change begin May 16, 2022. We covered this briefly in a post here, but this FAQ will go into more detail about how the changes will impact existing users – specifically existing users who would like to change subscription tiers.
With the addition of the new subscription tiers outlined above, we have implemented a proration system to account for existing users changing tiers within their active billing cycle. This system is based on the original date that a subscription began. By keeping your original subscription date for recurring billing purposes, we will not be asking you to commit any further time to a new subscription. The initial payment for your new subscription will be based on the remaining amount of time you have left for your original subscription.
For example, if you currently have a Standard – Annual subscription and would like to upgrade to a Pro – Annual subscription 3 months into your subscription cycle, your initial payment will be prorated based on the 3 months you’ve used for your existing subscription. The information below will show at the bottom of the checkout page for your new subscription level. If you originally subscribed May 1, 2022, and are changing your subscription on July 31, 2022, your proration details will look like this:
Subscription Usage:
- Days Used: 91
- Days Remaining: 274
Payment Information:
- Selected Tier Cost: $99.99
- Prior Payment: $53.99
Proration information:
- Prorated Due: $75.06
- Prorated Paid: $40.53
- Total Due: $34.53
Here is a full breakdown of the possible proration scenarios that users may encounter:
1) Previous subscription tier and your new subscription tier have the same billing period (i.e. Standard – Annual to Pro – Annual)*
- Your original billing date will be kept for the recurring payment. If you subscribed on May 1, 2022, you will be billed on May 1, 2023 at the new subscription amount. Your initial payment will be the difference between the prorated amount you paid for your previous subscription and the prorated amount that you owe for the new subscription. Keeping with the above example, your initial payment calculation will look like this:
($99.99 * 0.7507) – ($53.99 * 0.7507) = $34.53
- You used 75.07% of your original subscription ( 1 – (91/365) ), which is the amount of proration applied to your initial payment.
2) Previous subscription tier is Monthly and new subscription tier is annual (i.e. Standard – Monthly to Pro – Annual)
- Your original billing date will be kept for the recurring payment. If you subscribed on May 1, 2022, you will be billed on May 1, 2023 at the new subscription amount. Your initial payment will be the difference between the prorated amount you paid for your previous subscription and the full amount that you owe for the new subscription. For instance, if you are 14 days into your Standard – Monthly subscription, your initial payment calculation will look like this:
$99.99 – ($4.99 * 0.5484) = $97.25
- You used 54.84% of your original subscription ( 1 – (14/31) ), which is the amount of proration applied to your new annual subscription.
3) Previous subscription tier is Annual and your new subscription tier is Monthly (i.e. Standard – Annual to Pro – Monthly)
- This scenario is different than the others. If you were a previous annual subscriber and are changing to a monthly subscription, you will pay $0 at the time of this change. Your new monthly subscription will be active for a duration based on how long you used your previous annual subscription, and then the subscription will expire. For instance, if you subscribed to the Standard – Annual tier October 15, 2021 and are changing your subscription to the Pro – Monthly tier on 05/20/22, you will pay $0 at the time of this change. Your subscription will last until 07/26/22 at which point it will expire. The calculation looks like this:
Remaining subscription: $53.99 * (0.4055) = $21.89
Days remaining: ($21.89 / $9.99) * 30.5 = 67 days (rounded up)
Expiration date: 67 days after 05/20/22 = 07/26/22
- In this scenario, you had 40.55% of your original Standard – Annual subscription left at the time of the change, which equals $22.48 in credit. With the new $9.99 Pro – Monthly subscription, you have 67 days available at the new level. This subscription will expire on this date.
4) *Pro – Monthly changing to Standard – Monthly
- This scenario is similar to scenario #1 in how proration will occur with a slight caveat. Due to the decrease in cost between subscription tiers, you will not have to pay anything at the time of this change. Your original billing date will be kept for the recurring payment, and you will be charged the new subscription cost at the next billing date. However, due to this change, you will still need to enter your billing information at the time of checkout to update your subscription even though you will not pay anything at the time of checkout. This is due to limitations with our payment processing services.
A few notes:
- Currently, we are not allowing Pro – Annual users to downgrade to a Standard – Annual subscription. Due to the nature of our payment processing services, we are not able to refund any portion of the original subscription. In this case, your original subscription date would be kept, but access to the Pro tier features would be lost for the remainder of your original Pro – Annual subscription. Essentially, this is not a beneficial change for our users. If you would like to change from the Pro – Annual tier to the Standard tier, we would ask that you change to a Standard – Monthly tier (covered in scenario #3 above) and let your subscription expire based on the usage of your previous tier.
- We do not currently have the ability to account for more than the most recent subscription a user has registered for. Users who change multiple subscription tiers within the same billing period (both Monthly and Annual) will only have their most recent subscription accounted for in their proration calculation.
